Glenn Gould and the Variations

Here is a photo of Glenn Gould in February 1946, exactly 70 years ago! He is pictured with Mozart his parakeet, and his dog called Sir Nickolson of Garelocheed (or Nicky for short)!

Of course, it was Glenn Gould’s 1955 debut album of the Goldberg Variations that launched him to international acclaim. However, it is also because of his recording that the Variations themselves are so well known today and an integral part of the standard piano repertoire! The Goldberg Variations would be a central part of Gould’s recording and performing career until his death in 1982. He is buried in Toronto, where on his grave there are the first few bars of Bach’s Aria.
