Ensemble Tōzai repertoire

Performances by Ensemble Tōzai include a unique blend of music of Japanese traditional and western contemporary origin. All of the music is carefully chosen, commissioned or arranged to embrace the essential nature and shared spirit of the collaboration by these four wonderful musicians. A rare treat for audiences all over the world.

Japanese traditional music

Improvisations and arrangements of Japanese traditional music and melodies. Titles include Michi Gaku, Tsuru no Sugomori and Kokiriko Bushi.

Contemporary repertoire

Works by British composers include Bolt by Graham Fitkin and Shūso (Autumn Frost) by Julian Johnson featuring the shakuhachi.

Works by Japanese composers include Birds in Warped Time by Somei Satoh, the violin sonata by Godzilla composer Akira Ifukube and Afar by Yoichi Togawa.

Commissioned works

Ensemble Tōzai regularly collaborates with and commissions new works from living composers for special projects. The most important work in this category is Toru’s Mist by the extraordinary Gavin Bryars written for a nationwide tour of the United Kingdom as part of Japan 2001.
