Joji’s prolific career spans over 30 years and 16 albums, sculpting dynamic landscapes of rhythm and haunting melodies with the themes of nature and the beauty in everyday life.Born in Northern Japan, he began a lifelong study of percussion at the age of eleven and has been composing from the age of thirteen. He was trained by Itto Ohba – great master of Japanese Taiko Drumming – and his son Kazuoki. Joji has been musical director of the Red Buddha Theatre and the Lindsay Kemp Dance Company, a regular performer at Womad since 1986, working with Jah Wobble and Bill Evans’ Band, and has performed widely and recorded two albums in partnership with Pete Lockett as “Taiko to Tabla”.

Joji has also worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company both as solo percussionist and co-composer for its production of “Macbeth” in UK, Japan and the USA as well the film version broadcast on Channel 4. He has composed and recorded for Anglia and Channel 5 television and was asked to compose music for an animation film based on the story ‘Crossing the snow’ by Kenji Miyazawa that was showcased at the World Summit of Television for Children in Rio de Janeiro.

Joji Hirota received a commendation in 2003 from Ambassador Orita for his contribution to the introduction of Japanese culture in UK.
