French Horn

Martin began studying the horn at the age of thirteen. After progressing to play principal horn in the National Youth Orchestra, he won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, where he was awarded the Dennis Brain prize. Martin has appeared as principal horn with all the major London orchestras and many further afield including the Berlin Philharmonic, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, San Francisco, Berlin Radio, Frankfurt Opera, Bologna Opera and Colorado Festival Orchestras. After ten years as principal horn of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, he is now principal horn with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Philarmoniker. Martin’s interest in contemporary music has led him to play with Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Intercontemporain and the London Sinfonietta. Recent solo performances include several tours in the UK of Britten’s Serenade with Philip Langridge, Mozart Concerti with the RPO, Messiaen’s “Canyons” with Ensemble Modern and Strauss’ 2nd concerto with the New World Symphony conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. Recordings include the Britten Serenade for Linn records with Toby Spence and the Scottish Ensemble. Future engagements include Mozart’s 4th concerto and Schumann Konzertstuck with the RPO, a return to the Wigmore Hall and a tour of Japan with the Berlin Philharmonic Horns. Martin is also a fellow and professor at the Royal Academy of Music.
