Alex Edmundson (French horn)

Lancashire born Alex Edmundson was appointed Principal Horn of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 2021. Prior to joining the RPO, Alex was Co-Principal Horn of the London Symphony Orchestra for six years.

He studied with Jeffrey Bryant at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, before continuing as a Master of Music scholar at the Royal College of Music under Simon Rayner.

Alex regularly performs internationally as Guest Principal with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre National de France, London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia, BBC Concert Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

As a soloist, he has performed the Britten Serenade and the complete Mozart & Strauss Concertos, at venues including Cadogan Hall, Bridgewater Hall, and LSO St Luke’s. He has appeared twice as soloist with the RPO, and will premiere Joe Hisaishi’s The Border Concerto with Vasily Petrenko & the RPO in June 2026.

Alex was appointed Deputy Head of Brass & Horn Professor of the Royal College of Music in 2023.

He lives in London with his wife Eve-Marie, a French cellist, and their two daughters.
