Introduction

Regarded as one of the greatest examples of variation form, the Goldberg Variations BWV 988 by J.S. Bach consists of an aria and 30 dazzling variations.

The unlikely legend goes that Bach composed the Variations for Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, in order that he could soothe his employer’s insomnia.  As Bach weaves through aria, dance, canon and arabesque, we as listeners are carried on a journey through a wealth of emotion, both calming and captivating.

Reiko's journey

During the 2016/17 season Reiko undertook a very personal and spiritual journey, performing the Goldberg Variations to great acclaim at venues around the UK.

When Reiko was invited to return to the Southbank Centre in May 2018 to give the first solo piano recital at the newly refurbished Purcell Room, she chose to include the Goldberg Variations as the centre piece to her programme.

CD for Quartz Music

Reiko recorded the work in August 2017 and the disc was released on the Quartz Music label in June 2018.
