John Anderson (oboe)

Principal Oboe of the English Chamber Orchestra, John Anderson is one of the most recorded Oboists in the world.

A student of Derek Wickens and Terence McDonough, John also studied composition with Anthony Milner at the Royal College of Music. At the age of 20 he joined L’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and subsequently held principal posts with the BBC Symphony , Philharmonia and Royal Philharmonic Orchestras. Currently he is principal oboe of the English Chamber Orchestra.

John’s discography includes two versions of the Mozart Oboe Concerto, one with the RPO and the ECO and two of the Strauss concerto with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Philharmonia. He has also recorded concerti by Martinu and Francaix and a collection of Venetian baroque concerti.

His other recordings include recitals with piano and guitar and numerous chamber music recordings, the most recent being ‘Sahara’ (a concerto for Oboe and chamber orchestra by David Heath, which was written for him and the ECO) and the concertino by Volkmar Andrae with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

For over 35 years, John’s playing has featured on many recordings for film and television. Recent projects include ‘Far from the Madding Crowd’, ‘The Great Gatsby’ and ‘Mockingjay’.

John is a professor of oboe at the Royal College of Music in London and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. He has given masterclasses at all the music colleges in the UK as well as in Germany, Japan, China, Canada and SIngapore. John is also a graduate of the Open University in Social Science.
